History

HOSOO is a textile weaver of Nishijin brocade, which is a timehonored style of weaving created by purveyors at an abbey in Kyoto in 1688. Nishijin-ori is the name of a textile that uses a yarn dyeing technique popularized over 1200 years ago by nobles in the imperial courts of Kyoto, the samurai class and wealthy merchants. HOSOO began manufacturing and wholesaling Nishijin brocade in 1923. In addition to manufacturing and wholesaling traditional Japanese costumes, such as kimono and obi. HOSOO is also making full use of the technology and design of historical and traditional Nishijin brocade to develop fabrics targeted toward high-end markets throughout the world. Our goal at HOSOO is to communicate to the world the traditional Japanese aesthetic values that originated in Kyoto using the techniques of Nishijin-ori to promote a contemporary lifestyle based on themes that focus on traditional Japanese culture.
